Jeffrey Ewert returned to custody after parole suspension

Jeffrey George Ewert, a convicted murderer who had been attending law classes at McGill University in Montreal, has been returned to custody following the suspension of his day parole. Correctional Service Canada (CSC) confirmed that a suspension warrant was issued after reasonable grounds suggested Ewert may have breached his release conditions or that the risk he poses can no longer be safely managed in the community.

Ewert, who is in his 60s, is serving life sentences for a 1984 attack in British Columbia that resulted in the death of one woman and left a 15-year-old girl with permanent brain damage. His presence at McGill had sparked significant controversy and divided the student body, leading to opposing petitions regarding campus safety and his right to access education and rehabilitation.

The CSC stated that the case will undergo a formal review process, which may include further consideration by the Parole Board of Canada. Specific details regarding the nature of the parole breach have not been disclosed due to privacy laws.
