Jehovah's Witnesses allow members to decide on blood component transfusions

The Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses announced a new policy allowing members to decide, based on their own conscience, whether to accept transfusions of specific blood components. These components include red cells, white cells, plasma, and platelets.

Under the new guidance, members may also choose whether to donate blood for the purpose of providing components or fractions to other patients. This represents a shift from previous practices where members generally rejected both whole blood and its four primary components.

Despite this change, the organization maintains its strict prohibition against whole blood transfusions, citing biblical interpretations. Members have attributed the shift to a deeper understanding facilitated by medical advancements and spiritual guidance.
