Jehovah's Witnesses update blood transfusion policy

The Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses has announced a significant shift in its religious doctrine regarding blood transfusions. According to a new directive, ‘2026 Governing Body Update #6’, members are now permitted to personally decide whether to accept or donate the four main blood components: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma.

This decision is now considered a matter of individual conscience rather than a strict institutional mandate. The organization explained that because the Bible does not explicitly address these specific components, it is not appropriate to impose a universal rule. This follows a previous update in March 2026, which allowed members to decide on the use of their own blood during medical procedures.

Despite this flexibility, the prohibition against receiving whole blood transfusions remains unchanged. The organization continues to interpret biblical passages, such as those in Acts 15, as a clear mandate to abstain from whole blood. This policy change marks a historic departure from a rigid stance maintained since 1945 and is expected to impact how members navigate medical and surgical treatments globally.
