Jehovah's Witnesses update policy on blood component use
The Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses has announced a change in policy regarding the use of blood components. Under the new guidelines, individual members may now decide based on their own conscience whether to accept or donate specific blood components from a donor, specifically red cells, white cells, plasma, and platelets.
This shift applies to allogeneic transfusions, where components are sourced from another person. The new policy also extends to decisions regarding blood donation when the intent is to provide components or fractions for others. Additionally, the updated guidelines allow for greater flexibility regarding advanced surgical treatments involving autologous blood salvage.
Despite these changes, the organization's long-standing prohibition on whole blood transfusions remains unchanged. The religious stance against whole blood is based on the biblical instruction to ‘abstain from blood,’ and this core doctrine continues to be strictly upheld.
