Jehovah’s Witnesses update blood transfusion policy

The Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses has announced a significant shift in its medical doctrine regarding blood. As of September 18, 2026, individual members are permitted to decide based on their personal conscience whether to accept or donate four primary blood components: red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets.

This decision follows the organization’s interpretation that the Bible does not specifically address these four main components, making their use a matter of individual conscience between the believer and God. The policy change also extends to members deciding whether to donate blood specifically to provide these components or fractions for others.

Despite this relaxation, the organization’s fundamental prohibition against whole-blood transfusions remains unchanged. This core teaching is based on the biblical command to ‘abstain from blood’ (Acts 15:20). International spokesman Paul Gillies emphasized that blood remains sacred to the faith, but medical decisions involving specific components are now a matter of personal conscience. The organization noted that congregations will not interfere in these individual medical choices.
