JEITA releases 2026 implementation technology roadmap

The Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) has released the ‘2026 Implementation Technology Roadmap,’ which outlines significant shifts in the information and communications sector. The roadmap highlights a transition in computing architectures as semiconductor miniaturization slows down, leading to a greater need for diverse computing foundations, including accelerators and quantum computing.

Key focus areas include the evolution of data centers, which are expected to see power consumption rise from approximately 415 TWh in 2024 to over 945 TWh by 2030. To support this growth, advancements in optical transmission technologies, such as Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) and optical-electrical convergence, are being developed to enable high-capacity, low-latency communication within data centers.

The roadmap also covers trends in mobile devices, the metaverse, and the implementation of 5G millimeter wave and 6G technologies.
