Jeju police negligence leads to loss of CCTV footage in Jang Mi-ran disappearance
The body of Jang Mi-ran, a 37-year-old woman who disappeared in Jeju in May, has been discovered 101 days after her disappearance. Her remains were found near a farm in Jeju City.
Investigations revealed that 118 public CCTV cameras in the area where she was last seen had their footage automatically deleted because the police failed to request access within the 30-day retention period. The official request for the footage was not made by the Jeju Western Police Station until August 19, approximately 96 days after the initial report.
A police officer is currently under investigation for allegedly falsifying the case closure by claiming he had successfully contacted Jang Mi-ran shortly after the report was filed. Evidence later showed no such contact occurred. The officer faces charges including dereliction of duty and forgery of public electronic records. This incident follows a similar pattern in another recent disappearance case involving the same officer.
