Jeju education authorities announce support measures following deepfake crimes against teachers
Following a deepfake sexual crime involving a middle school student and teachers in Jeju, the Jeju branch of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union (KTU) has called for comprehensive support measures for victimized educators. The union is demanding that the Jeju Provincial Office of Education establish a system for the rapid deletion and blocking of illegal content, monitoring of digital materials, and provision of legal, psychological, and medical assistance. They also emphasized the need for administrative support, such as guaranteed leave and replacement personnel, to ensure teachers do not have to manage investigations and recovery alone.
In response, the Jeju Provincial Office of Education announced an integrated support plan to protect educational activities. Key measures include the expansion of a relief call center to operate until 10 PM and on weekends, and the provision of legal aid through ‘Our School Lawyers’—a group of 25 lawyers recommended by the Jeju Bar Association. The office will provide up to 6.6 million won per instance for litigation costs in civil or criminal cases filed against teachers. Additionally, the office will coordinate with the Digital Sex Crime Victim Support Center for digital sexual violence cases and plans to launch a dedicated Education Activity Protection Officer on January 1 next year.
