Jeju foreign tourist spending surges amid domestic decline
Foreign tourist spending in Jeju has surged, offsetting a decline in domestic consumption. According to data released by the Jeju Tourism Organization, foreign spending in the first half of the year reached approximately 305 billion won, a 44.4% increase compared to the same period last year.
In the second quarter, foreign spending rose by 34.5% year-on-year, while domestic spending fell by 7.7%. While Chinese tourists remain the largest group, accounting for roughly 45.8% of second-quarter foreign spending (85.1 billion won), there is a notable trend toward diversification. Spending from non-Chinese Asian, North American, and European tourists has seen significant growth.
Spending patterns vary by nationality and region. Chinese tourists concentrate their activities in the Shinjeju area, specifically in Yeon-dong for dining and retail, and Nohyeong-dong for accommodation and leisure. In contrast, tourists from North America and other Asian regions show higher spending in areas like Andeok-myeon and Yeorae-dong, often focusing on resorts and accommodations. The hospitality sector remains the largest expenditure category, followed by dining and retail.
