Jeju groups condemn National Human Rights Chair over Jeju 4.3 remarks

Jeju 4.3 organizations and the Jeju Provincial Council have issued strong condemnations against National Human Rights Commission Chairperson Ahn Chang-ho following his recent comments regarding the Jeju 4.3 Incident.

During a National Assembly audit on October 29, Ahn was asked whether the government's official truth-finding report contained evidence of involvement by North Korean forces or Kim Il-sung. Ahn responded that while the report does not contain such information, he believes “further historical verification is needed.”

In response, 57 local organizations, including the Jeju 4.3 Peace Foundation, released a joint statement criticizing the remarks as a “miserable historical perception” that undermines the honor of victims and their families. The Jeju Provincial Council also demanded that Ahn retract his statement and issue a formal apology, arguing that his comments provide ground for baseless claims that contradict the official findings of state violence.
