Jeju heatwave leads to 41 heat‑illness cases and one fatality

From May 15 to July 24, Jeju recorded 41 heat‑related patients, with 30 cases reported in July, accounting for more than 70 % of the total. One death was confirmed: an 80‑year‑old woman who succumbed on July 20 after experiencing breathing difficulties.

The incidents involved a 30‑year‑old runner with heatstroke, a 70‑year‑old farmer with heat‑exhaustion, a 20‑year‑old landscaper with heat cramps, and a 50‑year‑old construction worker who felt dizzy. Local authorities issued heat‑wave warnings across the island and advised residents and tourists to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat, and rest in cool places.

Extreme temperatures also heightened other safety risks. Seven jellyfish‑sting cases were reported at Jeju’s beaches, including a teenager in Seogwipo. Water‑play accidents increased, highlighted by a 40‑year‑old woman who collapsed while swimming at Aewol beach and was revived by CPR. Rental‑car collisions rose, and bites from insects and snakes surged during the holiday period. Fire‑safety officials urged the public to wear protective clothing, use life jackets while swimming, and avoid alcohol before entering the water.
