Jeju honors historical ties and 4.3 Incident survivors
In Jeju, community initiatives are focusing on honoring historical ties and remembering victims of past tragedies. The Jeju Social Welfare Community Chest has launched a special fundraising campaign running from August 16 to September 30, 2026. The initiative aims to support elderly Zainichi Jeju residents living in Japan who face economic hardship, health issues, and social isolation. The campaign seeks to reciprocate the historical support these residents provided to Jeju during its difficult periods.
Separately, a memorial service will be held on September 5 in Wolryeong-ri to commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the passing of Jin A-young. A survivor of the Jeju 4.3 Incident, Jin lived for over 50 years with her face covered in cotton cloth after losing her jaw to gunfire in 1949. The memorial event, titled ‘Unraveling the Heart, Connecting Memories,’ will feature musical performances, cultural programs, and traditional food tastings to honor her life and the collective wounds of the 4.3 Incident.
