Jeju Island hosts programs for Gender Equality Week

Jeju Island is hosting various programs to observe Gender Equality Week, themed ‘Son-sim-eong Making an Equal Jeju.’ The term ‘Son-sim-eong’ is a Jeju dialect meaning ‘holding hands,’ symbolizing a collective effort across generations, genders, and disabilities to foster equality.

The official commemorative ceremony is scheduled for September 5 at Buksu-gu Square and Sanjitmul Park in Jeju City. The event will include awards for 12 individuals who have contributed to gender equality culture, as well as the inauguration of a child and youth participation group. Activities will feature policy promotion booths, book exhibitions, and family-oriented experiential programs.

Additional regional activities include the ‘Son-sim-eong Play and Rest Festival’ at Sanjitmul Park, organized by the Jeju Women and Family Research Institute, which offers radio programs, water play, and parent rest areas. Other participating organizations, such as the Jeju Content Agency and the Jeju Cultural Arts Foundation, will host film screenings, expert talks, and sexual harassment prevention training throughout early September. The series of events will conclude on September 21 with special lectures and participatory programs at the Jeju Welcome Center.
