Jeju National University students selected for CubeSat development
The ‘Blue Orbit’ team, composed of undergraduate students from Jeju National University, has been selected for the beginner satellite category in the 7th Micro-Satellite Competition. The event was hosted by the Korea AeroSpace Administration and organized by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute.
Competing against 23 teams from 16 universities, including Seoul National University and KAIST, the Blue Orbit team was chosen for their technical feasibility and original planning. Notably, the team achieved this success through a self-organized aerospace club, ACE-L, despite the university lacking specialized satellite departments, expert faculty, or dedicated research facilities.
The team aims to develop a CubeSat designed to monitor Sargassum seaweed influxes along the coasts of Jeju and other Korean shorelines in real time. Supported by training and manufacturing funds, the team plans to complete development by 2028, with the goal of launching the satellite via the Nuri rocket.
