Jeju Police debunk viral YouTube rumors regarding public safety

The Jeju Police Agency has issued a statement refuting recent viral rumors regarding public safety on Jeju Island. The controversy stems from a YouTube video claiming a woman woke up in a reed field after taking a taxi while intoxicated and subsequently fled to report the incident to police.

Upon reviewing 112 emergency call logs and the Criminal Justice Information System, authorities confirmed that no such report exists. The police noted that several media outlets reported these claims by citing the YouTuber without verifying the facts with local law enforcement.

The video also included other claims, such as a recent assault in a public restroom and a jewelry store robbery involving foreign nationals. Police clarified that the restroom incident actually occurred in 2016, and the robbery mentioned took place in May 2024. Authorities expressed concern that presenting these as recent, ongoing threats without specific dates could cause unnecessary fear among residents and tourists.
