Jeju police officer arrested for falsifying missing person reports

A police officer from the Jeju Seobu Police Station has been urgently arrested following allegations of falsifying missing person reports. The officer is accused of dereliction of duty, forgery of public electronic records, and obstruction of official duties.

Investigations revealed that the officer allegedly closed the case of 37-year-old Jang Mi-ran in May by falsely claiming to have made contact with her, subsequently deleting her data from the missing person profiling system. The officer also allegedly closed a case involving a man in his 60s by falsely informing the family that the individual was safe but did not wish to be located. Following a re-report by the family, the man was discovered dead 51 days after his initial disappearance.

The scandal has prompted a full-scale investigation by the Jeju Police Agency into all missing person cases handled by the officer. Additionally, the incident has raised political concerns regarding investigative capabilities and potential gaps in the police's authority to close cases independently.
