Jeju police oversight campaign launched following misconduct scandal

Publicity expert Lee Je-seok conducted a guerrilla public interest campaign in Jeju, South Korea, using symbolic CCTV cameras to call for greater oversight of police authority. The campaign featured installations near the Jeju Seobu Police Station and the location where a woman's body was recently discovered.

The campaign was prompted by a controversy involving the Jeju Seobu Police Station, where an officer was arrested for allegedly falsifying the conclusion of a missing person report. The officer is accused of deleting missing person information from the police system and failing to conduct a proper investigation, which led to the loss of critical CCTV footage. The victim, a woman in her 30s, was found deceased 104 days after she went missing.

The symbolic CCTVs used in the campaign did not record any actual footage or collect personal information. The installations were temporary and were removed by the organizers on the same day. The campaign aims to satirize systemic flaws and emphasize that public authority must be subject to citizen scrutiny.
