Jeju Province expands safety measures following missing persons cases

Jeju Province is implementing comprehensive safety measures following a series of missing persons cases and controversies regarding the police response. To prevent the loss of critical evidence, the province plans to extend the retention period for public CCTV footage from 30 days to over 60 days and will invest approximately 8 billion won to expand storage capacity.

Governor Wi Seong-gon announced plans to strengthen the regional safety net by increasing the deployment of AI-based CCTV systems, aiming for a 75% coverage rate by 2030. The province will also establish a unified response system for missing and crisis incidents to improve coordination between the police, coast guard, fire department, and local authorities.

These developments come amid growing public anxiety and online calls for a boycott of Jeju tourism. While local tourism industries are concerned about the potential damage to the region's safety image, they remain cautious about the actual impact on visitor numbers. In response, the provincial government is also increasing patrol personnel in remote areas like Olle trails and coastal regions to enhance visitor security.
