Lee Chang-heum appointed as Jeju Climate Economy Vice Governor

Lee Chang-heum, a former official from the Ministry of Environment, has been appointed as Jeju Special Self-Governing Province’s first Climate Economy Vice Governor. Following a personnel hearing where the Jeju Provincial Council issued a “suitable” opinion, Governor Wi Seong-gon officially presented the appointment letter.

While Lee is recognized as an expert in climate and environmental policy with significant experience in the central government, the appointment has faced scrutiny. During the hearing, concerns were raised regarding his lack of direct experience in managing economic and energy policies, as well as his role as a climate environment secretary during the December 3 martial law incident.

The Jeju Provincial Council’s opposition, specifically the People Power Party, criticized the composition of the personnel hearing committee, labeling it “one-sided” and “unfair.” They noted that out of nine committee members, eight belonged to the Democratic Party and one to the Progressive Party, leaving the main opposition party with no representation. The opposition argued this structure undermines the council's role in providing balanced oversight.
