Jeju Province to update conservation area designations
Jeju Special Self-Governing Province is preparing to announce a revised plan for its absolute, relative, and managed conservation area designations. The update follows a periodic five-year survey aimed at refining land protection categories based on scientific data.
The proposed changes are expected to expand absolute and managed conservation areas. Key drivers for this expansion include the discovery of new colonies of the endangered Jeju Gosarisam plant in Seonheul-ri and Dongbok-ri, as well as the identification of new lava cave entrances and sumgol (natural fissures).
Conversely, some areas previously designated as absolute conservation zones within Hallasan National Park may be downgraded to managed conservation areas following their removal from the national park status. Additionally, adjustments are expected for areas near the 5.16 Road and the English Education City as they transition into urban zones.
Jeju officials stated that the revision process involves expert advisory committees to ensure objective criteria, as these designations impact both environmental preservation and citizens' property rights. A public inspection period is scheduled for early next month, with final official notification expected in the first half of next year following provincial assembly approval.
