Jeju shifts transportation policy with tram withdrawal and new taxi pilot
The Jeju provincial government is undergoing a significant shift in its transportation policy under the current administration. Several major initiatives from the previous administration are being reconsidered or withdrawn. These include the implementation of island-style bus stations and dual-door buses for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, as well as the planned introduction of hydrogen-powered trams. The decision to halt the hydrogen tram project was driven by the high production costs of green hydrogen and a need to explore alternative power sources.
In contrast to these withdrawals, the province is launching new demand-responsive transport services to improve mobility in underserved areas. A pilot program called ‘Regional Responsibility Taxi’ has commenced in Gujwa-eup, targeting mountainous villages where bus and standard taxi services are infrequent. The program utilizes 10 taxis that are guaranteed a minimum daily income of 160,000 KRW to ensure drivers remain in these areas. The province plans to expand this service to 10 other towns and townships across Jeju by 2029.
