Jeju to host World Wetlands Day ceremony on August 27
The 25th World Wetlands Day ceremony will be held on August 27 at the Jeju International Convention Center in Seogwipo. Under the theme ‘Wetland Conservation, Our Promise to Protect Our Future’, the event aims to highlight the ecological value and importance of wetlands as vital carbon sinks and habitats.
The location was chosen to highlight the Ojo-ri tidal flat, which was designated as a wetland protection area in late 2023 and serves as a habitat for endangered species like the black-faced spoonbill. The ceremony, hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and co-hosted by the Ministry of Environment, will include government awards, including a Presidential Citation, to recognize contributions to wetland conservation.
Side events will feature exhibitions of marine life content and screenings of films related to Jeju's intertidal zones. Cultural performances by singer Jang Pill-soon and the Jeju Ullim Musical Children's Choir are also scheduled. The event also serves to celebrate the recent expansion of South Korea's tidal flats, including the Yeosu, Goheung, Muan, and Seosan areas, to the UNESCO World Heritage list.
