Jelgava Hospital appoints new medical equipment engineer following procurement investigation
After the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) and the European Public Prosecutor Office (EPPO) inspected Jelgava Hospital over two public procurement contracts worth a combined €657,000, the hospital announced it has hired a new medical‑equipment engineer. Mayor Mārtiņš Daģis said the municipality and the hospital are ready to cooperate with law‑enforcement agencies and does not expect similar problems to arise.
The criminal investigation alleges large‑scale fraud and abuse of official position, suggesting that a contractor may have colluded with a procurement committee member to influence the tender specifications and secure an unjustified advantage. The probe covers purchases of €491,500 and €165,500 and is part of a broader series of investigations into public‑procurement irregularities in Latvian hospitals.
