Jelgava youth hockey match conflict triggers criminal investigation
The Latvian State Police have launched a criminal investigation following a violent conflict between parents during a youth U11 hockey game in Jelgava on September 20. The incident occurred during a match between the Tukums/Stiga RM and Hockey Planet teams, resulting in the game being interrupted.
Jānis Grands, an assistant coach for Tukums/Stiga RM and a member of the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation Parents' Council, reported being physically assaulted by parents and receiving death threats. Grands stated that several parents entered the ice to confront officials, leading to a physical altercation where he sustained injuries.
Conversely, parents from the Hockey Planet club claim the incident has been misinterpreted and that viral videos are taken out of context. They argue that their actions were a response to aggressive behavior from the Tukuma team's players and an attempt to protect their children from violence that was not addressed by the game officials.
