Indonesia launches regional rabies vaccination drives for World Rabies Day

To mark World Rabies Day 2026, various regional governments in Indonesia have launched initiatives to prevent rabies through mass vaccinations and sterilization programs.

In North Sumatra, the provincial government, in collaboration with the Indonesian Veterinary Medical Association (PDHI), has declared a commitment to becoming rabies-free by 2030. This includes ensuring vaccine availability across all regencies and strengthening veterinary medical capacity. The province recently received a MURI certificate for administering 15,000 rabies vaccine doses.

Central Java, which has maintained rabies-free status since 1997, is allocating 10,000 free vaccine doses in 2026 to prevent reintroduction via animal movement. Similarly, the Jembrana Regency is implementing monthly rotating vaccination and sterilization services across five districts to target high-population areas for dogs, cats, and monkeys.

Other regional activities include free vaccination drives in Bali and a large-scale vaccination of over 1,000 animals by PDHI West Java V, covering dogs, cats, monkeys, and civets.
