Jemiriye releases Olúróunbí inspired by Yoruba folktale
Afro-fusion artist Jemiriye Adeniji, known professionally as Jemiriye, has released a new single and music video titled ‘Olúróunbí’. The project is rooted in a traditional Yoruba folktale that explores themes of ambition, sacrifice, and the personal cost of success.
The song retells the story of Olúróunbí, a woman who seeks motherhood and prosperity by striking a bargain with a sacred Iroko tree, only to face anguish when the pact must be fulfilled. Jemiriye uses this ancient narrative to address modern pressures, specifically the expectations placed on Black women to constantly prove their worth in competitive environments.
Musically, the track blends Nigerian rhythms and indigenous Yoruba chants with live orchestral instrumentation and contemporary production. The project was recorded in Paris and the United States, while the music video was filmed in Bali, Indonesia.
