Jena health study reveals social disparities and mental health challenges

A 2026 health survey conducted by the Jena Health Service in Germany indicates that while 65 percent of residents rate their health as good or very good, significant disparities exist regarding mental health and living conditions.

The study, which surveyed 1,549 randomly selected residents aged 18 and older, highlights that mental health is a major concern. One in five respondents reported significant psychological distress, a figure that rises to nearly one in three among those aged 18 to 29. Common issues cited include stress and loneliness.

Other findings include:

• Heat exposure: 24 percent of participants suffer significantly from heat in the summer, particularly in public transport and the city center, with nearly half reporting poor sleep during high temperatures. • Caregiving: One in ten respondents cares for relatives in need of care, often finding the task burdensome. • Lifestyle: Smoking rates at 15 percent are notably lower than the national average, though 7 percent of respondents consume alcohol daily.

Kathleen Lützkendorf, the department head for social affairs, health, immigration, and climate, stated that the results will help the city design more targeted health promotion measures by addressing the conditions under which people live, work, and learn.
