Jena to expand Fritz-Ritter-Straße sidewalk

Starting September 1, 2026, construction work will begin on the west side of Fritz-Ritter-Straße to expand the sidewalk. The project requires the removal of five trees, including two mountain maples that show signs of damage and reduced vitality. A young field maple will also be removed to accommodate a planned parking space for vehicles.

To compensate for the loss, seven new trees will be planted in the immediate vicinity or nearby suitable locations. The replanting plan includes the use of the Stockholm model, which utilizes appropriately sized tree pits and measures to protect the root zone to ensure the long-term health of the new vegetation.
