Jena to host memorial for 1933 National Socialist book burning

A memorial event is scheduled for August 26, 2026, in Jena to commemorate the National Socialist book burning that occurred on that date in 1933. The event marks the anniversary of the NSDAP's seizure of power in Thuringia, which was intended to be solidified through a “cultural takeover.”

According to historical records from the Jena newspaper dated August 28, 1933, the books burned on the Jena marketplace included social democratic and trade union writings seized from the “Zum Löwen” trade union house and the SPD office. The 2026 commemoration will include historical context presentations, readings by students and adults, and a discussion regarding the establishment of a permanent living memorial site in the city.
