Jena updates: Obi-Tunnel reopens and CDU warns against trivializing SED dictatorship

In Jena, the Obi-Tunnel has reopened to pedestrians via a gravel path as of August 17. The passage is approximately 1.20 meters wide and is not barrier-free. While the tunnel is accessible, the full expansion of the pedestrian and cycle path from Camburger Straße is expected to continue until October 31. A complete closure of the tunnel is scheduled to occur again from October 12 to October 30 due to technological reasons.

Separately, the Jena CDU has issued a warning against trivializing the SED dictatorship. Marking the 65th anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall, the party emphasized that the wall served to maintain the power of the SED rather than to protect people. CDU leader Guntram Wothly stated that comparing the current Federal Republic to a dictatorship misinterprets the reality of the former regime and fails to respect its victims. The party called for the continued inclusion of the SED dictatorship in history curricula to honor democratic resistance and the memory of those persecuted.
