Jennifer Garner explores grief and food culture in new series The Five‑Star Weekend
Actress Jennifer Garner stars as Hollis Shaw, a food blogger who retreats to her summer home in Nantucket to confront grief with four friends spanning different periods of her life. The Peacock series, based on Elin Hilderbrand’s 2023 novel, uses food as a vehicle for healing, friendship and self‑reflection.
Garner notes that modern reliance on delivery apps and prepared meals has eroded basic cooking skills, saying, “We’ve started to just lose sight of how simple it is to crack an egg in a frying pan and just swirl it right there with a little oil.” The show highlights the environmental impact of food packaging and the cultural loss of the kitchen as the home’s hearth. The cast includes D’Arcy Carden, Regina Hall, Chloë Sevigny and Gemma Chan, each portraying distinct relationships that shape the protagonist’s journey.
Beyond the culinary focus, the series examines themes of aspiration, identity and the tension between past and present, reflecting Garner’s own reflections on how personal history informs public persona.
