Jennifer Jo Cobb ordered to pay $850K in North Carolina marriage lawsuit
A North Carolina jury has awarded Tracey Hughes $850,002 in a lawsuit against former NASCAR driver Jennifer Jo Cobb. The verdict, reached in Davidson County Superior Court on September 24, follows a three-day trial regarding allegations of an extramarital affair.
Tracey Hughes filed the suit in January 2024, alleging that Cobb intentionally seduced and alienated the affections of her husband, Clayton Hughes, leading to the couple's separation in 2021. The complaint claimed the relationship involved regular trysts and efforts to cover up the affair. During the trial, testimony from a private investigator described overhearing intimate encounters at a hotel, which supported the claims of the affair.
The case was litigated under North Carolina’s “heart balm” laws, which are among the few remaining in the United States that allow a spouse to sue an alleged affair partner for monetary damages resulting from a disrupted marriage.
