Jennifer Lawrence rejects returning to X-Men role as Mystique
Actress Jennifer Lawrence has stated she has no interest in reprising her role as the mutant Mystique, despite the character's potential return within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In recent interviews with Allure magazine and the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, Lawrence cited the grueling physical demands of the character's makeup as the primary reason for her decision.
Lawrence, who played the character in four films between 2011 and 2019, described the transformation process as a “nightmare.” She noted that the application of body paint and airbrushing often took eight hours per session, which she found physically uncomfortable due to the cold temperature of the air and her sensitivity to being tickled. She also mentioned the mental toll of extreme sleep deprivation and the patience required to endure such long makeup sessions.
While she expressed enjoyment for the stunt work and the opportunity to train physically, the aesthetic requirements were a significant deterrent. Lawrence also recalled that the intense hair dyeing required during her initial screen tests caused permanent damage to her hair. Although she noted that “never say never” is a common rule, she was emphatic in her refusal to undergo such a transformation again.
