Jens Spahn resigns CDU district chairmanship following surrogacy controversy

Jens Spahn has resigned from his position as the CDU district chairman for Münsterland. This decision follows a public controversy regarding his use of a surrogate in the United States to have a child, a practice that is illegal in Germany and contrary to previous stances held by his party. Spahn expressed regret for having disappointed trust but will retain his seat in the Bundestag and serve on the Budget Committee.

Dorothee Feller, the North Rhine-Westphalia Minister of Education, has been elected as Spahn’s successor with 95.5 percent of the vote. Feller’s primary focus moving forward will be the 2027 state election.

In a separate political development in Bavaria, Justice Minister Georg Eisenreich (CSU) has announced his resignation from the state cabinet, effective at the end of September. Eisenreich, who has served in the state government for 13 years, stated he intends to end his professional political career to pursue other interests, including cabaret writing and legal work. Minister-President Markus Söder expressed regret over the departure but thanked Eisenreich for his service.
