Jenson Button escapes injury in 2006 Monza test crash

Twenty years ago today, Formula 1 driver Jenson Button escaped injury following a high-speed accident during a testing session at the Monza circuit in 2006. While driving the Honda RA106, Button lost control in the Parabolica corner, where cars typically reach speeds of approximately 260 km/h due to low-downforce configurations.

The crash was attributed to a mechanical failure in the left rear of the vehicle, likely involving the suspension or wheel mounting. After braking for the turn, the rear of the car lost traction, sending the vehicle into the gravel trap and eventually into the tire barriers. The impact caused extensive damage to the left side of the car and parts of the bodywork.

Despite the severity of the impact, the cockpit remained intact, allowing Button to exit the vehicle unassisted and report no injuries. While the incident caused a significant interruption to Honda’s testing program, the team conducted investigations to prevent a recurrence during the upcoming Grand Prix weekend.
