Jeonbuk addresses regional resource sovereignty and Olympic funding concerns
The Jeonbuk Research Institute has released a policy briefing titled ‘Regional Trends, Jeonbuk 2027,’ outlining ten key policy directions to address regional crises. The report emphasizes the need to maintain the unique identity of Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province amidst increasing competition, prevent the outflow of people and businesses, and ensure that profits from local resources—such as sunlight, wind, water, and data—remain within the region.
Simultaneously, the Progressive Party's Jeonbuk provincial chapter has raised concerns regarding the financial implications of the 2036 Summer Olympics bid. The party criticized a revised plan that reportedly increases the number of stadiums from 37 to 51 while significantly shifting the financial burden from national funds to local government funds. Specifically, they noted that national funding estimates dropped to 670.9 billion won, while local funding requirements rose to 2.7972 trillion won. The party is demanding transparency regarding the proposed joint hosting discussions with Seoul and the specific cost-sharing arrangements between the central government, Seoul, and Jeonbuk.
