Jeonbuk Province to provide annual allowance to Donghak Revolution descendants

Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province has announced it will become the first local government in South Korea to provide an annual allowance to the descendants of participants in the Donghak Peasant Revolution. A total of 723 eligible descendants—including children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren—will receive 1.2 million KRW per year.

The annual payment amount was doubled from the originally planned 600,000 KRW. The total project budget for this year is 868 million KRW, which will be shared between the province and local municipalities at a 3:7 ratio. To qualify, descendants must have been registered residents of Jeonbuk for at least one year as of January 1.

Applications will be accepted at local community centers from the 4th to the 22nd of next month. Following a verification process by mid-October, payments are expected to be distributed between November and December. The province intends for this initiative to serve as a catalyst for the central government to expand national honors and recognition for the historical movement.
