Jeonbuk State Council condemns Superintendent Cheon over budget remarks
The Jeonbuk State Council has issued a formal statement condemning Jeonbuk State Superintendent of Education Cheon Ho-seong for remarks regarding the provincial budget. The conflict arose following Cheon’s comments during a press conference, where he suggested that approximately 160 billion won in budget allocations over the past four years were linked to requests from provincial council members and deemed inappropriate.
The Council characterized these remarks as a “major provocation” that fosters distrust in representative institutions and insults the legitimate legislative activities of council members. They argued that the budget in question was reviewed and compiled by the Office of Education itself, and that council members were simply addressing local issues and resident needs through the budget deliberation process.
The Council has demanded that Superintendent Cheon immediately retract his statements, issue a formal apology to the public and the Council, and cease administrative practices that undermine the oversight functions of the legislature. They also called for more sincere communication and an end to unilateral administration.
