Jeondeungsa Temple area designated as National Scenic Spot

The area surrounding Jeondeungsa Temple on Jeongjoksan Mountain in Ganghwa County has been officially designated as a National Scenic Spot. This designation recognizes the landscape value of the site, which integrates natural scenery with historical and cultural assets such as Samrangseong Fortress, Jeondeungsa Temple, and the Jeongjoksan Archive.

The designated area covers 154,370 square meters across 15 parcels in Gilsang-myeon. This move shifts the management approach from protecting individual cultural assets to a comprehensive preservation of the integrated natural and historical landscape.

While the designation does not impose new regulatory burdens on local residents—as the area was already subject to existing cultural heritage protection zones—it allows for significant government support. Under the ‘Act on the Preservation and Utilization of Natural Heritage,’ the city can receive up to 70% in national subsidies for projects involving repairs, landscape improvements, and disaster prevention facilities. Incheon Metropolitan City plans to apply for additional national funds by November 2026 to renovate hiking trails and enhance the viewing environment.
