Lee Jun-seok resigns as Reform Party leader
Lee Jun-seok has resigned as the leader of the Reform Party, taking political responsibility for the party's poor performance in the June 3 local elections. The party secured only one local council seat during the elections. Lee stated that he attempted to propose reforms and strengthen the party, but failed to gain sufficient support from within the organization. Following his resignation, the party leadership, including the policy committee chair and supreme council members, has also resigned. Cheon Ha-ram, the floor leader, will serve as the acting party leader to oversee the election of a new leadership team.
Separately, investigations have revealed that Jeong Yi-han, a former Busan mayoral candidate for the Reform Party, orchestrated a staged attack on himself to boost his public profile. According to prosecution documents, Jeong and an accomplice meticulously planned the incident, which involved an accomplice throwing a green tea latte and boiled eggs at him while shouting insults. Jeong specifically requested a colored beverage like green tea latte so the stain would be visible on his clothing. The duo also provided false statements to police, claiming they were strangers. Furthermore, Jeong's spouse was found to have been aware of the scheme and submitted a false petition for leniency for the accomplice.
