Jeonju City reviews cooperation projects after failed merger with Wanju

Following the failure of the administrative merger between Jeonju and Wanju, the sustainability of their mutual cooperation projects is under scrutiny. Jeonju City Council members have called for a fundamental review of these initiatives, citing significant financial burdens. Since 2022, the total cost of cooperation projects has exceeded 107 billion KRW, with Jeonju City covering more than 60 billion KRW—representing over 70% of the total expenditure.

In response, Jeonju Mayor Cho Ji-hoon announced plans to conduct a comprehensive survey of all major cooperation projects to establish a settlement report and a general maintenance plan. The city aims to ensure that these projects do not place an excessive burden on municipal finances while still delivering practical results. As immediate administrative integration appears difficult, the city is considering the special local government system to address specific policy goals such as financial city development and the relocation of public institutions.
