Jeonnam-Gwangju expands island ferry fare subsidies to 34 islands
Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City has announced an expansion of its island ferry fare subsidy program. With a budget of 5.2 billion won, the initiative will increase coverage from 19 islands across 7 routes to 34 islands across 15 routes in 6 municipalities.
The program provides a 50% discount on passenger ferry fares to reduce the cost of island travel and boost tourism accessibility. This expansion is strategically linked to the upcoming 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo. In Yeosu, supported routes include Yeosu to Geomundo, Dolsan-eup to Geumodo, Baekyado to Geumodo, Baekyado to Nangdo, and Yeosu to Yeondo. Other major routes include Goheung to Geomundo, Mokpo to Gageodo, Haenam Woosuyeong to Jangsan-do, Jindo to Gammado, and Jodo to Jindo.
To alleviate land traffic congestion during the Expo, the city will also invest 600 million won to operate half-price yacht and cruise tours as alternative transportation. The subsidies apply strictly to ferry fares and do not cover terminal fees or vehicle transport. Local authorities advise travelers to check specific application periods, as schedules may vary by municipality based on budget and day of the week.
