Jeonnam-Gwangju industrial electricity costs could drop by 425 billion won annually
The implementation of a regional industrial electricity rate system is projected to reduce electricity costs for industries in the Jeonnam-Gwangju region by up to 425 billion won annually. This policy, driven by the Ministry of Climate, Energy, Environment and Korea Electric Power Corporation, aims to reflect transmission costs and regional power self-sufficiency rates by applying differential rates across the country.
In the Yeosu petrochemical sector alone, annual savings are estimated between 170 billion and 235.5 billion won. Furthermore, if the planned Honam semiconductor cluster—which includes large-scale fabrication plants—is established, the annual electricity cost savings could approach 1 trillion won. This reduction is expected to enhance the region's competitiveness in attracting high-tech industries such as semiconductor manufacturing and AI data centers.
