Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City launches regional development initiatives
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City is implementing several strategic initiatives to bolster regional development and social welfare.
In energy policy, the city has begun procedures to designate three areas—Haengam-dong in Nam-gu, Hwajeong-dong in Seo-gu, and Oryong-dong in Buk-gu—as specialized distributed energy zones. Utilizing a ‘community microgrid’ model, these zones aim to produce, store, and consume renewable energy locally to reduce pressure on the power grid and create revenue opportunities for residents.
Regarding social welfare, the city is redesigning its population and youth policies to align with expanded national government support. This includes reviewing existing programs like basic birth income and youth cultural welfare cards to eliminate overlaps with national subsidies while focusing resources on local blind spots. A ‘Youth Welfare Package Project’ is being conceptualized to provide customized support based on life cycles and residential characteristics.
Additionally, the city's Planning and Finance Committee recently inspected the Namdo Haksuok facility in Seoul. The visit aimed to monitor the living and study conditions of local students residing in the capital, ensuring the facility effectively supports regional talent development and helps students prepare for future employment.
