Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City faces first National Assembly audit
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City is preparing for its first National Assembly audit following its establishment approximately 100 days ago. The audit, scheduled for next month, will focus on the effectiveness of the new integrated administrative system, the distribution of functions across three main government offices, and the management of a 20 trillion won financial support package.
Key issues include the allocation of authority between the Gwangju, Muan, and Dongbu offices. The city is also facing scrutiny regarding the development of a semiconductor industrial complex at the Gwangju military airport site, which requires significant power and water infrastructure. The relocation of the military airport remains a critical factor for the success of this semiconductor cluster.
In tandem with the audit, the city has finalized its organizational restructuring. Under the new plan, four vice-mayors will be stationed across the three offices to manage specific sectors: Gwangju will handle administration and future industries like AI; Muan will oversee balanced development, budget, and welfare; and Dongbu will manage industry, economy, and labor. To mitigate citizen inconvenience caused by this split, the city will implement a standardized civil service system across all locations.
