Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City pursues institution consolidation and energy HQ bid
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City is moving forward with plans to consolidate 12 public institutions to eliminate redundant functions and improve service efficiency. Following a meeting of public institution heads, the city aims to submit ordinances to the city council this October. If approved, the integrated entities are expected to officially launch in January 2027.
In a separate but related development, Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City and Naju have formed a joint task force to lobby for the relocation of the headquarters of the newly planned Korea Power company to Naju. The government intends to merge five existing power generation companies—Korea South-East Power, Korea Southern Power, Korea Mid-East Power, Korea Western Power, and Korea East-West Power—into a single entity by October 2027. The task force will emphasize Naju's existing energy infrastructure and its status as a hub for renewable energy transition to secure the headquarters, which is expected to employ approximately 1,800 people.
