Jeonnam-Gwangju region records highest number of vacant houses in South Korea
The Jeonnam-Gwangju integrated metropolitan area has recorded the highest number of vacant houses in South Korea, with over 23,537 abandoned properties according to data from the Korea Real Estate Board’s ‘Binjib-ae’ system.
This surge is attributed to rural depopulation caused by low birth rates, an aging population, and migration to urban centers, alongside the decline of old city centers. Mokpo reported the highest number of vacant homes at 2,187, followed by Yeosu with 1,830 and Haenam with 1,754.
Experts warn that these abandoned properties pose safety risks and can lead to increased crime and waste dumping. Current efforts to utilize these homes through ‘Rural Vacant House Bank’ programs remain insufficient, as less than 1% of vacant houses are registered for use, with most listings focused on sales rather than the rentals preferred by young residents or returning farmers.
