Jeonnam-Gwangju residents weigh economic hardship against industrial hopes

During the Chuseok holiday, residents and politicians in the Jeonnam-Gwangju region expressed a mix of economic anxiety and hope for future industrial development. Local lawmakers reported significant public concern regarding the high cost of living, stagnant local economies, and the financial burdens on small business owners, with some comparing the current economic climate to the IMF crisis.

Regarding regional governance, there is significant attention on the recent administrative integration of Jeonnam and Gwangju. While there is anticipation for large-scale projects like the Honam semiconductor cluster and mega-special zones to revitalize the economy, citizens expressed a lack of tangible benefits so far. There are also calls for leadership to proactively manage potential conflicts arising from the integration, such as issues surrounding the location of administrative offices and the selection of national medical schools.

In rural areas, concerns were raised regarding agricultural instability, rising production costs, and the need for fair implementation of farmland surveys to protect elderly and tenant farmers. Residents emphasized that future industrial investments must translate into actual local jobs and improved living standards, including better welfare, childcare, and transportation.
