Jeonnam-Gwangju seafood processing production hits record high

The seafood processing production value in Jeonnam-Gwangju reached a record high of 2.6397 trillion KRW, marking a 7.4% increase from the previous year. This figure accounts for 29.8% of South Korea’s total seafood processing production, maintaining the region's first-place national ranking for six consecutive years since 2020.

The growth was primarily driven by seaweed products. Dried seaweed production reached 1.2413 trillion KRW, while seasoned seaweed contributed 564.8 billion KRW. This surge in seaweed value offset declines in other categories such as seaweed (miyeok), squid, and kelp, despite a 1% decrease in total production volume caused by high water temperatures.

By region, Mokpo recorded the highest production value at 544.1 billion KRW, followed by Haenam (457.7 billion KRW) and Goheung (340.9 billion KRW). In terms of volume, Goheung led with 68,000 tons.

In contrast to the seaweed boom, the abalone industry in Wando is facing structural challenges. Despite increased production, the sector is struggling with falling prices, slowing consumption, and rising operational costs for seeds, feed, and labor. Local authorities are currently conducting research to improve distribution, processing, and export diversification to stabilize the industry.
