Jeremiah Smith sets records in Ohio State's 42-19 win over Illinois

No. 7 Ohio State defeated Illinois 42-19 in their Big Ten conference opener at Ohio Stadium. The victory was driven by a historic performance from wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, who recorded 12 receptions for 217 yards and four touchdowns, tying a program single-game record. With this performance, Smith became the first player in Ohio State history to surpass 3,000 career receiving yards.

Quarterback Julian Sayin also had a career-best game, completing 27 of 36 passes for 367 yards and four touchdowns, all of which were caught by Smith. Sayin also contributed a rushing touchdown, showcasing an evolving dual-threat capability noted by head coach Ryan Day.

While the offense was dominant, the Buckeyes' defense allowed 462 total yards, the most since October 2024. Illinois' rushing attack managed 199 yards, led by Aidan Laughery's 113 yards. Despite the defensive struggles, Ohio State extended its winning streak against Illinois to 10 games and its home winning streak to 11 games.
